Food waste in Australia is no longer just a question of what happens to leftovers after dinner. It has become a household cost issue, a landfill issue, a climate issue, a council-services issue and, increasingly, a question about how Australians are expected to separate food organics from general rubbish.

Australia wastes around 7.6 million tonnes of food each year. Households account for about 2.5 million tonnes of that total, and food waste is estimated to cost the Australian economy more than $36.6 billion annually. The Australian Government also estimates that food waste is responsible for around 3% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, Australia has a national target to halve food waste by 2030 and to halve the amount of organic waste sent to landfill.

Those numbers explain why Food Organics and Garden Organics, better known as FOGO, is becoming much more visible. Some Australians already have a green-lidded FOGO bin. Others have a green bin that accepts garden waste but not food. Some live in apartments where organics collection is difficult. Some councils are introducing FOGO now, while others are still planning services, trialling alternatives or supporting at-home options such as compost bins, worm farms and food-waste dehydrators.

That creates understandable confusion. Is FOGO mandatory? Can food scraps go in every green bin? What happens if you live in an apartment? Is home composting still useful when council FOGO exists? What is the difference between traditional composting, Bokashi, worm farming and an electric kitchen composter? And what should you actually do with unavoidable food scraps if you want a cleaner, simpler system at home?

The most important principle is simple: preventing edible food from becoming waste should come first. The question is how to deal with those scraps in a way that suits your home, your local rules and your routine.

What is food waste?

The Australian Government defines food waste as food intended for human consumption that is thrown away. It can occur anywhere along the food supply chain, including farms, processing facilities, transport, retail, hospitality and households.

At home, it helps to think about food waste in two broad categories.

The first is avoidable food waste. This includes food that could reasonably have been eaten if it had been purchased, stored, planned or used differently. Examples include leftovers that are forgotten in the fridge, fresh produce that spoils before it is used, bread that goes stale, takeaway portions that are thrown out, or pantry items that pass their use-by date.

The second is unavoidable or less-avoidable kitchen material. In everyday household language, people often include this under the broader idea of food waste even though not every scrap was originally intended to be eaten. Examples include vegetable peelings, fruit skins, eggshells, coffee grounds, tea leaves, bones, stalks and preparation trimmings.

That distinction matters because the best food-waste strategy does not begin with disposal. It begins with prevention. If edible food can be eaten, stored, frozen, shared, donated or repurposed, that usually creates more value than processing it after it becomes waste.

For households, a practical order of priority is:

1. Buy and prepare only what you are likely to use.

2. Store food correctly so it lasts longer.

3. Use leftovers and ageing ingredients before buying more.

4. Freeze, share or donate suitable surplus food where possible.

5. Separate unavoidable scraps from general rubbish.

6. Recover those scraps through FOGO, home composting, worm farming, Bokashi, community composting or another appropriate organics solution.

How to reduce edible food waste before it becomes waste

The most effective food-waste system is the one that prevents good food from becoming waste in the first place. Composting and FOGO are important, but they sit further down the hierarchy than eating the food you have already bought.

For Australian households, this matters financially as much as environmentally. When edible food is thrown away, the household loses the purchase price as well as the resources used to grow, manufacture, refrigerate, package and transport it. Plan around the food you already have

Think about the number of people eating at home, planned nights out, school or work lunches, and whether leftovers are likely to be eaten. If you consistently throw out the same food, buy less of it or choose a format that lasts longer.

Understand date labels

Food labels can be confusing, particularly the difference between a use-by date and a best-before date. A use-by date relates to food safety and should be followed. A best-before date generally relates to quality; some foods may remain acceptable after that date if they have been stored correctly and are otherwise safe to eat.

Follow the product label and official food-safety guidance rather than using smell or appearance alone for foods where safety is uncertain.

Make the fridge easy to scan

A crowded fridge creates hidden waste. Store foods that need to be eaten soon where they are visible, and keep similar items together so you can see what you already have.

A simple "use first" shelf or container can be surprisingly effective. Put opened products, leftovers and produce approaching the end of its useful life there. When someone wants a snack or you start preparing dinner, check that area before opening something new.

Label and date leftovers

Leftovers become much easier to use when people know what they are and when they were prepared. Use clear containers where practical, add a date, and store food in portions that are easy to reheat.

If you know the leftovers will not be eaten soon, freezing them early can preserve more value than waiting until they are almost forgotten.

Use the freezer as a prevention tool

Freezing is one of the simplest ways to interrupt the path from "we might eat this" to "this has to go in the bin".

Bread, cooked meals, sauces, ripe bananas, chopped herbs, some fruit, stock ingredients and many leftovers can be frozen in suitable containers. Freeze in useful portions and label what is inside. A freezer full of unidentified containers simply moves the waste problem to a colder location.

Create a leftovers night

A regular leftovers meal can reduce waste without requiring new recipes. Once or twice a week, use remaining cooked food, open vegetables, sauces and small portions before making another full meal.

Once edible food has been prevented from becoming waste, the remaining challenge is what to do with unavoidable scraps. That is where FOGO, composting and at-home food-waste processing become relevant.

How much food does Australia waste?

The scale is large enough that food waste is now a national policy issue.

The Australian Government's current food-waste reporting says Australia wastes around 7.6 million tonnes of food each year, which is more than 300 kilograms per person. Households account for about 2.5 million tonnes, or roughly 30% of the total. The estimated economic cost is more than $36.6 billion each year.

The environmental cost extends beyond the discarded food itself. Producing food requires land, water, energy, fertiliser, labour, refrigeration, packaging and transport. When edible food is wasted, many of those inputs are wasted with it.

Australia's National Food Waste Strategy set a target to halve food waste by 2030. More recent national circular-economy and waste-policy work continues that direction, including a target to halve the amount of organic waste sent to landfill by 2030.

There has been some progress. National reporting cited by the Australian Government indicates that food waste sent to landfill fell from 127 kilograms per person in 2016-17 to 102 kilograms per person in 2022-23. That is a meaningful decline, but the national target still requires further changes across households, councils, businesses and the food supply chain.

For households, one of the most visible changes is the increasing separation of food organics from general rubbish.

Why food waste in landfill is a problem

Food is biodegradable, so it can seem harmless to put it in a rubbish bin. The problem is what happens after that rubbish reaches landfill.

In a well-managed composting system, organic material is broken down under controlled conditions with oxygen, moisture and biological activity. In landfill, buried food can decompose in low-oxygen conditions. That process produces landfill gas that includes methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Landfill also removes organic material from a useful cycle. Food scraps contain carbon and nutrients that can potentially be recovered through composting or other organics-processing systems. When they are mixed into general rubbish, that material is much harder to recover.

That is why governments increasingly treat food organics as a separate resource stream rather than simply another form of household rubbish.

The goal is not necessarily to force every household to compost in the same way. Australia is geographically diverse, housing types vary, infrastructure varies and councils operate different collection systems. The broader direction is to keep more organic material out of landfill and move it toward prevention, reuse, composting or other recovery methods.

How to set up a low-mess food-waste routine at home

Many households understand the environmental case for separating food waste but dislike the day-to-day experience. Wet scraps leak. Kitchen caddies become unpleasant. Fruit flies appear. Shared rubbish rooms smell. Children or housemates put the wrong things in the wrong bin. A system that looks sensible on paper can fail because it is annoying in practice.

The best household food-waste setup is therefore not necessarily the most sophisticated. It is the one people can follow every day with minimal friction.

Put the collection point where food waste is created

Most household food scraps are produced at the sink, chopping board, coffee machine and dining table. Place the caddy, compost container or appliance close enough that scraps do not need to be carried across the kitchen.

Convenient placement reduces the temptation to put food in general rubbish simply because that bin is closer.

Keep excess liquid out where practical

Very wet scraps create more mess and can contribute to odour. Drain obvious excess liquid before placing food into a caddy, compost container or appliance, and follow the requirements of whichever system you use.

This does not mean food has to be dry. It means avoiding unnecessary liquid such as soup broth, cooking oil or a container full of sauce where the system is not designed for it.

Decide how frequently scraps will leave the kitchen

A caddy that is emptied frequently behaves very differently from one that sits for a week. If your council collects FOGO weekly, you may still choose to empty the kitchen container daily or every few days depending on what is inside and your climate.

Some households freeze high-odour scraps until collection day. Others use a sealed caddy, Bokashi bucket or electric food-waste system to reduce the time wet scraps remain untreated indoors.

Separate the most difficult scraps

Not every food scrap creates the same household problem. Dry vegetable peels are generally easier to store than fish scraps, meat trimmings, wet leftovers or dairy.

If odour is your main concern, establish a specific routine for the high-odour materials your local system accepts. That may mean freezing them, processing them promptly, wrapping them according to council guidance or taking them to the organics bin more frequently.

Make the rules obvious

Contamination often happens because different waste systems look similar. If a household has general rubbish, recycling, FOGO and perhaps a separate compost system, use clear labels or visual prompts rather than expecting everyone to remember complex rules.

For FOGO, base those labels on your council's current accepted-material list. Do not assume a generic list from another council applies locally.

Clean the collection equipment before it becomes unpleasant

Rinsing and drying a kitchen caddy, wiping the lid and removing trapped residue is easier than dealing with a heavily soiled container later. Follow any council advice about liners and cleaning, and only use compostable liners where the local service accepts them.

If you use an appliance, follow the manufacturer's cleaning and filter-maintenance instructions rather than waiting for odour or performance problems to appear.

Plan the final destination before buying equipment

This point is often missed. A worm farm needs somewhere suitable to live. Bokashi material needs a next stage. An electric kitchen composter produces a dry organic output that still needs to be used or directed appropriately. Traditional compost requires somewhere for the finished compost to go.

Before choosing a solution, decide what happens at the end of the process. If you live in an apartment with no garden, that may mean a community garden, a friend's garden, a building compost system or another accepted organics pathway.

Design for the least enthusiastic person in the household

If a food-waste system only works when one highly motivated person manages it perfectly, it is fragile. Make the routine simple enough for a visitor, teenager or housemate to understand without a lecture.

A practical kitchen system usually answers four questions at a glance:

1. What goes here?

2. What stays out?

3. When does it get emptied or processed?

4. Where does the material go next?

Getting those four answers right can make a bigger difference to household participation than adding more bins or more rules.

What does FOGO mean?

FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics.

A household FOGO service usually allows residents to place accepted food scraps and garden material into a dedicated green-lidded bin. The material is collected separately from general rubbish and transported to an organics-processing facility, where it can be processed into compost or another recovered organic product.

A typical household FOGO system may include:

  • a green-lidded kerbside bin for food and garden organics;
  • a small kitchen caddy for collecting food scraps indoors;
  • council guidance on what is and is not accepted;
  • weekly or fortnightly collection, depending on the council; and
  • commercial-scale composting or another organics-processing method after collection.

The exact rules vary. One council may accept meat, bones, dairy and certified compostable caddy liners. Another may accept food but not compostable packaging. A green bin in one area may be a true FOGO bin, while a green bin somewhere else may be for garden waste only.

That is why the safest rule is always to check your local council's instructions before putting food into a green bin.

What is the difference between FOGO, FO and GO?

You may see several similar terms when reading council waste information.

FOGO means Food Organics and Garden Organics. Food scraps and garden material are collected together.

FO means Food Organics. This refers to a separate food-only collection. It can be useful in apartments, hospitality settings or locations where residents do not generate much garden waste.

GO means Garden Organics. A GO or green-waste service accepts garden material such as grass clippings, leaves, weeds and small branches but may not accept food.

This distinction is especially important in Brisbane. Brisbane City Council rolled out a standard green-waste service to eligible houses, but food is not accepted in that green-waste bin. Council instead directs residents toward at-home composting, community composting and its compost rebate program for food-waste recycling equipment.

A green lid, therefore, does not automatically mean FOGO.

How does FOGO work after collection?

Once a FOGO bin is collected, its contents are taken to an organics-processing facility rather than being mixed with general rubbish.

The processing method depends on the region and facility. Material may be screened for contamination, shredded or blended, and composted under controlled temperature, moisture and aeration conditions. Some systems use enclosed processing stages before material is matured outdoors. Other organic-waste facilities may use different technologies.

The objective is to turn separated organic material into a usable recovered product rather than burying it in landfill.

Contamination is one of the biggest operational challenges. Plastic bags, glass, metal, nappies, packaging and other non-organic material can reduce compost quality and increase processing costs. That is why councils put so much emphasis on what belongs in a FOGO bin.

If your council provides FOGO, following its local instructions matters more than relying on a generic national list.

What can usually go in FOGO — and why local council rules still come first

Australians often search for a single national list of what can go in a FOGO bin. In practice, there is no universal list that overrides local instructions.

FOGO facilities differ. Councils contract different processors, use different caddy-liner policies and may phase services in at different times. An item accepted in one local government area may be excluded in another.

That said, the common pattern helps explain how FOGO is intended to work.

Materials commonly accepted in household FOGO services

Depending on the council, accepted food organics often include:

  • fruit and vegetable scraps;
  • meat and fish scraps;
  • bones and shells;
  • bread, rice, pasta and grains;
  • dairy products;
  • leftovers and plate scrapings;
  • coffee grounds and tea leaves; and
  • food that has spoiled and cannot safely be eaten.

Garden-organics services may also accept:

  • lawn clippings;
  • leaves;
  • small branches and prunings;
  • weeds; and
  • flowers and other plant material.

Some councils accept food-soiled paper, paper towel or council-approved compostable caddy liners. Others do not. Treat these categories as local-policy questions rather than national assumptions.

Materials commonly excluded

FOGO is an organics stream, not a general "biodegradable-looking" bin. Common contaminants include:

  • plastic bags and packaging;
  • glass;
  • metal;
  • disposable nappies;
  • wipes and sanitary products;
  • ordinary pet-waste bags;
  • treated timber;
  • rocks, soil and building materials; and
  • packaging labelled biodegradable where the local processor has not approved it.

Even packaging marketed as compostable may be restricted. Commercial-compostability certification does not automatically mean every local FOGO facility accepts the item.

Why contamination matters

A FOGO bin is collected as a relatively clean organics stream. Plastic, glass and other contaminants have to be removed, can damage equipment and can reduce the quality or usefulness of the final compost product.

Contamination also increases processing cost. When a stream becomes too contaminated, material that could have been recovered may be harder or more expensive to process.

That is why a council may seem unusually strict about liners, packaging or seemingly minor items. The rules are generally designed around the requirements of the facility receiving the material.

The green-lid trap

A green lid does not automatically mean FOGO.

Some Australian councils provide a green-lidded garden-organics bin that accepts leaves, grass and pruning material but specifically excludes food. Brisbane is a current example: its green-waste recycling service is not a household FOGO service and food should not be placed in that bin.

Before adding food to any green bin, confirm that your council describes the service as FOGO or explicitly lists food as accepted.

What if you are unsure about one item?

Use your council's website, waste app or customer-service information. If the answer remains unclear, leave the item out until you can verify it. One uncertain item is not worth contaminating an entire organics load.

Is FOGO mandatory in Australia?

There is no single household FOGO rule that operates identically across every Australian state, territory and council.

Australia's national waste policy supports the rollout of organics collection and includes a goal of FOGO services for metropolitan households and businesses by 2030, but state, territory and local governments are responsible for the details of waste collection. The result is a patchwork of mandates, legislated rollout dates, established services, voluntary programs, trials and alternative at-home diversion initiatives.

That means statements such as "all Australians must have a FOGO bin by 2030" are too broad. The national direction is toward much wider organics separation, but the legal requirements and service models differ by jurisdiction.

For households, the practical question is not simply whether FOGO is "mandatory in Australia". It is:

What does my state require, what service does my council provide, and what options make sense for my home?

The following overview reflects the Australian landscape as at August 2026.

FOGO in New South Wales

New South Wales now has one of the clearest legislated FOGO pathways in Australia.

The NSW Parliament has passed legislation requiring councils to provide a FOGO service to households that receive a council residual-waste collection service by 1 July 2030. Businesses and institutions are being brought into source-separated food-organics requirements in stages beginning from 1 July 2026, with thresholds stepping down over time.

For households, the headline date is 1 July 2030. By then, councils must provide eligible households that receive a red-lid residual service with a FOGO service.

There are important details for apartments and other multi-unit dwellings. NSW has temporary exemptions for certain older multi-unit buildings where existing waste-chute design and shared waste areas make separate FOGO collection impractical. Those exemptions demonstrate a broader point: high-density housing can make organics separation more complicated than it is for a detached house with several kerbside bins.

The NSW EPA also makes an important clarification: the FOGO mandate does not prohibit other circular uses of food organics. Home composting, other recovery methods and at-home food-waste processing can still have a role, provided relevant legal and council requirements are followed.

For Soilux users in NSW, the correct positioning is therefore not "use Soilux instead of FOGO". If your household is required to use a council or commercial organics service, those requirements still apply. An at-home system may instead help you manage food scraps indoors, reduce wet waste volume and odour, or prepare organic material before it is ultimately used or disposed of through an appropriate pathway.

FOGO in Victoria

Victoria is standardising household waste and recycling through a four-stream system:

  • red for general rubbish;
  • yellow for mixed recycling;
  • purple for glass; and
  • lime green for food organics and garden organics.

Current Victorian climate-policy material states that all households receiving a council-operated waste service are expected to have access to FOGO by 1 July 2027. Privately serviced multi-unit dwellings are a more complicated category because they are not covered in exactly the same way by council service obligations. Victoria has identified support for organics recovery in those buildings as an ongoing priority, with a broader goal that every Victorian household can access FOGO or local composting by 2030.

That creates two distinct household experiences.

If you live in a house with a council service, your FOGO pathway may be straightforward or already established.

If you live in an apartment, build-to-rent development, retirement community or another privately serviced multi-unit property, the system may depend on the building's waste contract, bin room, chute design, available space and management arrangements.

For those households, reducing the amount of wet food waste stored in communal bins can be particularly valuable, even where a building eventually provides a formal organics service.

FOGO in Queensland

Queensland does not currently have one statewide household FOGO mandate equivalent to the NSW model. Instead, councils are moving at different speeds and the Queensland Government is supporting multiple organics-diversion approaches.

A particularly important development is the GROW FOGO Fund. In June 2026, Queensland expanded the program so all councils can access funding streams, including support for at-home organics-diversion equipment. The eligible category now includes options such as compost bins, worm farms and food dehydrators.

Under the current funding structure, councils can receive up to $15 per household for eligible at-home organics-diversion equipment and up to $10 per household for related education and awareness where the program criteria are met. This is council funding, not a direct state rebate that individual households can claim on their own.

Queensland is also actively investigating food-waste solutions for high-density and shared-living environments. A South East Queensland program launched in 2026 is testing approaches across apartments, townhouses, resorts and retirement living, including dehydrators, separate food-organics collection, on-site composting and other processing pathways.

The takeaway for Queensland households is that local council information matters enormously. Some councils are introducing FOGO. Some are trialling systems. Some support home composting. Some have green-waste services that do not accept food.

Brisbane is the clearest example of why local detail matters.

Brisbane food waste, green bins and the compost rebate

Brisbane households now commonly have access to a green-waste recycling bin, but that service is not a FOGO service. Brisbane City Council explicitly states that food cannot be placed in the green-waste bin.

Instead, Council encourages residents to manage food scraps through options such as home composting and community composting. It also operates a Compost Rebate Program.

Eligible Brisbane residents can currently claim up to $100 for eligible composting equipment and up to $200 for eligible food-waste recycling equipment. The $200 category includes household benchtop food-waste dehydrator systems and in-sink food-disposal systems, subject to Council's eligibility rules and approval.

For a food-waste dehydrator claim, residents must purchase eligible equipment, keep an acceptable receipt, submit the required property and contact information, and provide bank details for the rebate. Council says successful claims are generally paid by direct deposit within 30 days.

This creates one of the clearest current examples in Australia of a council directly encouraging at-home food-waste processing.

It is important to describe the rebate accurately. Brisbane City Council, not Soilux, determines eligibility and pays the rebate. Product owners should check the current Council terms before purchasing if the rebate is an important part of their decision.

Brisbane's approach also demonstrates that FOGO is not the only way a government can pursue organics diversion. In a city where food is not accepted in the standard green-waste bin, at-home systems and community composting can form part of the broader waste strategy.

FOGO in Western Australia

Western Australia already has substantial council-level FOGO adoption, but services are not uniform across the state.

WasteSorted reported that 27 local governments were providing kerbside FOGO services as at May 2026. Participating councils include metropolitan and regional areas, and the list continues to evolve.

Where FOGO is available, households should follow their council's accepted-material guidance. Where it is not available, residents may rely on traditional home composting, worm farms, local organics programs or other at-home solutions.

For Western Australian households, the existence of a council FOGO service does not make home composting redundant. Many gardeners prefer to retain some organic material at home rather than send it away for centralised processing. Others use FOGO for materials they do not want in a home compost system, such as certain meat, bones, dairy or heavily soiled food items where the local council accepts them.

An indoor composter can sit alongside those systems for households that want faster processing, less wet material sitting in the kitchen or greater flexibility about when scraps are handled.

FOGO in South Australia

South Australia has invested for years in household kitchen-caddy systems, compostable liners, council education and organics processing. The state continues to treat food waste as one of the biggest remaining opportunities in household waste diversion because food still represents a substantial share of material found in residual rubbish bins.

For South Australian households, the decision is often less about gaining access to organics separation and more about how they prefer to manage food before collection. Some households are comfortable using a caddy and green bin. Others prefer home composting. Apartment residents may have a different experience depending on building services.

FOGO in the Australian Capital Territory

The ACT is still operating a FOGO pilot rather than a universal territory-wide household service.

As at 2026, more than 6,000 households in selected areas are included in the ACT FOGO pilot. More than 2,000 of those households are in apartments or townhouses, making the ACT one of the more useful real-world examples of organics collection in multi-unit housing.

Pilot participants can place food scraps into their green-lidded FOGO bin along with accepted garden material. The organics are processed into compost rather than being sent to landfill.

Households outside the pilot should not assume their ordinary green garden-waste bin accepts food. The ACT Government specifically advises that only FOGO pilot residents can place food waste in the relevant green-lidded FOGO service.

FOGO in Tasmania

Tasmania does not currently operate one universal statewide household FOGO system. Services are being delivered and expanded by individual councils and regional partnerships.

Launceston has a long-running voluntary FOGO service. Sorell commenced FOGO in July 2026 using existing green-waste bins as FOGO bins for eligible households. Other Tasmanian councils and regional groups have introduced or expanded services on different timelines.

That makes Tasmania another place where local council guidance should be treated as the primary source of truth. A Tasmanian resident should check whether their council offers FOGO, whether it is automatic or opt-in, what materials are accepted, and how often the bin is collected.

Food organics in the Northern Territory

The Northern Territory has organics-diversion work and has funded or examined FOGO infrastructure, but there is not currently a single territory-wide household FOGO service comparable to the emerging NSW model.

Local programs and trials have existed, including past household FOGO trials in Alice Springs, while Territory circular-economy funding has identified FOGO as an important waste stream.

For Northern Territory households, council or municipal guidance remains the best place to check what is available locally.

What if my council does not offer FOGO?

Not having FOGO does not mean food scraps have to go straight into general rubbish.

The best option depends on your housing type, garden access, how much food waste you generate, how much effort you want to put into the process and what you want to do with the final organic material.

Common alternatives include traditional composting, worm farming, Bokashi systems, community composting hubs and electric benchtop food-waste systems.

Some households use more than one method. For example, a gardener might use a compost pile for leaves, lawn clippings and vegetable scraps, while using a council FOGO bin for bones and materials they prefer not to compost at home. An apartment resident might use an electric system for day-to-day scraps and place the processed output into a suitable composting or organics stream. There is no single correct household system. The goal is to find a method you will actually use consistently.

The main ways to manage food waste at home

Traditional composting

Traditional composting uses biological decomposition to convert organic material into mature compost over time. A home compost bin, tumbler or pile generally needs a suitable balance of nitrogen-rich material, carbon-rich material, moisture and oxygen.

However, the material coming out of a Bokashi bucket is not usually the final stage. It generally needs to be buried in soil, added to a compost system or processed further before becoming mature soil amendment.

Bokashi therefore works best for people who have somewhere suitable for the next stage.

Community composting

Community compost hubs are useful for households that want to separate food scraps but do not have the space or desire to manage their own system.

Brisbane City Council, for example, partners with community gardens and other locations so registered residents can contribute scraps to local compost hubs.

Availability depends on where you live, and users need to follow the rules of the individual program.

Council FOGO

Where available, FOGO is one of the lowest-effort methods because the council or waste provider handles the actual processing. Your household's responsibility is mainly to separate accepted organics correctly and keep contamination out of the bin.

The main limitations are local service availability, collection schedules, shared-bin arrangements in apartments and the fact that the finished compost usually leaves the household rather than being kept for your own garden.

Electric benchtop systems are designed for households that want to process food scraps indoors rather than leave wet organic material sitting in a caddy, rubbish bin or outdoor compost system.

Different products work differently, and the labels used in the market are inconsistent. You may see terms such as electric composter, kitchen composter, food recycler or food-waste dehydrator.

Many use controlled heat, mixing, airflow and filtration to remove moisture, reduce volume and break food into a dry organic material. Some manufacturers describe the output as compost, compost-like material, fertiliser or a soil amendment.   • a compact worm farm where rules and conditions allow;
  • Bokashi where there is a suitable next-stage disposal pathway;
  • a community compost hub; or
  • an indoor electric food-waste system.

Before buying any equipment for an apartment, consider benchtop space, ventilation, noise, maintenance, where the finished material will go and whether your building has relevant rules.

Why food-waste odour and fruit flies become a household problem

1. Understand the finished output

Ask what comes out of the machine and what the manufacturer says you should do with it.

A good purchase is one you will still use six months after the novelty has worn off.
